It has been a long break, but I have felt prompted to go back and look some more at Susannah.

I have found her baptism record, 20 March 1867, parents Henry and Amelia. Middlesbrough, Yorkshire.

The 1871 UK Census had a terrible mistranscription as Savanah Sappit, living with her mother Amelia and siblings Alfred, Wallace, Henry, "Jno", and Amelia. She is the youngest child.

We have already seen her 1881 Census record.

She is back in the UK, with her parents, in the 1891 Census, as Susannah Hovey, daughter, married, 24 with a son Harry Hovey, 18 months, born Queensland, Australia. The inward passenger list for the "Ormuz" has Mrs Hovey and Infant arriving in London on the 9th January 1891, from Sydney via Melbourne, Adelaide, Colombo, Suez, Naples and Gibraltar.

So, now we have a surname to search again for Susannah in the QLD BMD, and indeed we can find the following marriage:

The 1903 Australian Electoral Rolls have a Susannah and Thomas Hovey (a miner) living in North Queensland. Using the surname as a guide, we have children born to Thomas Douglas Hovey and Susannah Soppitt in Queensland before and after 1891:

No wonder I was having trouble finding her in the records - look at all the different attempts at transcribing her surname. However, I cannot find a death record for Susannah with the Hovey surname, and she disappears from the electoral rolls after 1908.

Some time back, Julia made a comment about Susannah Soppitt, her great aunt, who fitted nicely in age with the Susannah Soppitt on the Chyebassa.

Since it is such an uncommon combination of names, I searched the 1881 Census and there was but one of that name and age, living in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire with her family.

Henry was born in Durham, and worked as a Pilot. John was a Pilot's Apprentice. Amelia was a Dressmaker. The Goodyear boys were listed as "Step son", presumably sons of Emily from a previous marriage; it appears that both Henry and Emily were on their second marriages.

FreeBMD has a marriage in Sculcoates District in June Quarter 1880 between Henry Soppitt and Emily Goodyear. A likely candidate for Henry's earlier marriage is at Newcastle on Tyne, March Quarter 1865. for Emily's earlier marriage, the most likely is Emily Birch to James Rutter Goodyear in Sculcoates District in December Quarter 1870.

The Durham/Newcastle on Tyne connection fits, as the only likely Joseph Soppitt in the 1881 Census was living in Durham.

Susannah does not 'feature' anywhere in the Queensland Historical Index.

Now, back to Albert. He enlisted on 14th February 1916, in the 2/11 Machine Gun Company. His mother's address was given as Gatton Street, Cairns. He was 19 years and 7 months old. He was killed in action on 29th September, 1917, in Belgium. Lily CARD administered his estate.
By 1923, Emma Avon Card ROYAL was living in Withington Street, East Brisbane. (I wonder if she contacted Jen and Ella?)
Emma ROYAL was buried in Balmoral Cemetery, Brisbane, on 26th September 1929, aged 61 years. Thomas Daniel ROYAL buried in same grave, 11 June 1923, aged 67 years.

Looking for the Tait surname in the National Archives for 1914-1918, we find:

He enlisted on 2 January 1915, and was currently serving in A Squadron, Ayr Light Horse.He was 27 years old, and a farmer. Lydia's address is given as Maidavale, via Ayr, N.Q. He joined 25th Battalion, 7th Infantry Brigade.
He was killed in action on 5th August, 1916. His will placed Lydia at Traquair Farm, Maidavale.

He enlisted on 31st January 1916. He went to France on 10th April 1917, after some time in Fargo hospital and Durrington Camp No.3. Wounded in action on 20th September 1917, he was repatriated to Australia on 5th April 1918 with a gunshot (shell) wound to the back of the left knee.

Lydia TAIT was buried in Ayr Cemetery on 10th June 1952, one day after her death, aged 82 years.
Her husband, Robert TAIT, was buried in Ayr Cemetery on New Years Day 1932, also one day after his death.
They are buried in adjoining graves (1030 and 1031).

Well, that's the Juster family sorted out.

Today, visited with Marle and Erica Juster at their lovely home by the shores of Moreton Bay. Erica has collected a considerable amount of information on the family, their life in Queensland, and their English heritage. However, the family history somehow missed the fact that "grandmother", Catherine Waugh, traveled over here on the ship with the family at 80 years of age.

Rosina and Jessie, like my great-aunts Jen and Ella, never married. In one of those coincidences (or did they choose the location?) they lived at Merton Road (remember, the family originated from Merton, Surrey), South Brisbane. So why can't I find them in the Brisbane City Council burial records?

The other mystery is - why does Prince Street, in what used to be Thompson Estate, no longer show on street maps of Brisbane? Marle is sure it was there some years ago, and feels he could navigate his way back there quite easily. Maybe we will have to do just that. Addition and Correction: It's only that it doesn't show on Whereis.com. It is in my street directory in the car - Prince Street, Annerley.

So, in summary, the Juster family, with their building and grocery interests, prospered in the Colony and State of Queensland. There are numerous descendants and, best of all, there is someone 'looking after' the family history.

Now, to move on and chase down descendants of the Avon girls and Ellen Smalley.

Ralph Smalley did not marry and died in 1919.

I dipped into the Queensland BMD on-line, and found that:
Emma Avon married Henry Card in 1886 (didn't take her long to land a feller!)
Lydia Avon married Robert Tait in 1888.

Lydia and Robert produced at least 6 children:

More about the Juster Family

A look at the National Archives of Australia website brings up some snippets of the life of some the Juster family after they settled in Brisbane. The younger couple, William and Emily Rebecca had two sons who enlisted in the Great War. One, Albert, served in France and was wounded but survived. The other, Walter Richard, lied about his age and enlisted at age 19 without his parents' consent. His parents discovered this, and Walter was discharged. He re-enlisted in WW2.

William and Emily lived in Prince Street, Thompson Estate, South Brisbane. We have already established their place of burial in an earlier post. (Thompson Estate is now part of Annerley and Fairfield. Prince Street seems to no longer exist under that name.)

It seems also that Isaac Juster emigrated with his wife, Anne Margaret. A son, Leslie Manson Juster, enlisted (at less than 19 years of age, but apparently with parents' consent) in the Great War and died of wounds. It is fairly clear that this is the same Isaac Juster in the 1881 Census.

Isaac James Juster was a Wholesale and Retail Grocer, Produce and Tea Merchant (established 1885), in Wellington Road, East Brisbane at the time of the Great War. He lived at Cracknell Road, South Brisbane. There appear to be no burial records for this pair in Brisbane City Council cemeteries.

(There are two entries in the WW2 Nominal Roll for Lex Albert Juster - one Army, one RAN. The Army man gives Walter as next of kin, the Navy man gives Henrietta. There is an anomaly in the dates of birth, same day, but different years. This has been explained by Marle: Lex signed up, under age, in the Volunteer Defence Corps, by being untruthful as to his true age. Later, he joined the RAN. The Australian War Memorial Nominal Roll information shows that he neglected to obtain a discharge from the VDC when he joined the RAN.)

So who else was on the Chyebassa with Samuel and Jane Drew and family? A whole mob of people! Looks like quite a few were born on the voyage, too. This is an incentive to get a copy of the passenger list - apparently, it can be had from the Queensland Archives for $12.

And I wonder if the Harvey family is from Cornwall, and possibly relatives of Drew? Probably not - a preliminary look at the Census shows that there are at least two Harvey families mixed up in the list, one of which is from Puddletown, Dorset.

Who was on the Chyebassa, September-October 1885? Mrs Stafford and Matron

There are references to Mrs Stafford in the autographs, about her stylish mode of dress and her run-ins with Matron. Looking through the passenger list, we find that Mrs Stafford appeared to be travelling with a number of young children:

Were they coming out to join Mr Stafford? There is a likely candidate that came out in February 1885, but the Brisbane burial records suggest differently. When one looks at the Brisbane City Council grave location website, things become a little more exciting.

There is a grave in Toowong cemetery containing:

Stafford Annie Elizabeth	F	12 / 10 / 1943	87 years

So maybe Alexander Stafford, 8, wasn't 8 years old at all, but 38. A birthdate of c.1847 would make him 38 in 1885.

Looking for Ralph Stafford, born c.1880 in the BCC cemeteries gives us this:

Spot on for date of birth. And we know the name of his partner, now.

William Stafford is a little more problematic. This is the closest, in South Brisbane, although the calculated date of birth is out by about 2-3 years.

Looking at marriages for Alexander Stafford in the years before the birth of Mary, no registered marriage has an Annie E on the same register page.

The only Alexander and Annie couple in the 1881 England Census, with about the right dates of birth, do not have the correct children. Other Annie E Stafford listings are either unmarried or otherwise unsuitable candidates.

Anyhow, there is a basis for further investigation of this family, through death certificates of Alexander and Annie E, and of Ralph.

The Matron on the voyage was a Mrs Priscilla A Symes. The passenger lists show that she was quite the seafarer.

Francis Henry do, son, 18 months, born Shackelwell (sic), Middlesex.
Herbert Oliver do, son, 5 months, born Tottenham, Middlesex.
Peter PETERSON, father, widower, 63, Watchmaker, born Stepney, Middlesex.

In the 1861 Census, Priscilla A PETERSON is a Teacher of Music, living in Shacklewell Road. Her mother, Ann, was born in Calcutta, and her brother Peter was a Mariner. Father was a Watch Dial Maker.

There are marriages for Priscilla Ann PETERSON in 1867 (Hackney) and 1872 (Ware), but apparently not to SYMES. Cannot find a likely marriage.

And there ends the story, as Queensland BDM records to 1914 do not record a marriage or death. The only Crago births after 1885 have either Francis Crago or John Crago as father. So, what happened to Frances J Crago?

A Frances Jane CRAGO was born in Holborn, Middlesex, in the March Quarter of 1863, which is close enough to the stated age. Nobody of that name, age, and birthplace shows in 1871 or 1881 Census indexes.

It looks from the notes around the autographs that Jen and the Juster girls were involved in a certain amount of high jinks, and some of that involved Matron (Mrs Symes) and Mrs Stafford, and the girls' grandmother.

I cannot find the younger William in the 1881 Census. There is a William H Juster of the right age, visiting the Huxter family in Lewisham, with a birthplace of Stepney, Middlesex. There are two good candidates for Emily Sharp in the census.

I can imagine Samuel Drew and William Juster sitting on the deck talking carpentry, while the girls had the run of the ship, eyeing off the young Constables and chuckling over the antics of Mrs Stafford and Matron Symes.

So, whatever happened to this big family? Again, one day I will have to search some more and find out. In the meantime, some burial records from the Brisbane City Council:

So who were the people that travelled with the Drew family when they set out on their journey to the Colonies? From the Autograph books of Great-aunts Ella and Jen, we can glean several names; Avon, Juster, Smalley, Crago, Mrs. Stafford, and Matron.

Let's take "Lilly Avon" as the first for this little series of stories.

From Jen's autograph book, a message that Jen appeared not to heed.

From the transcriptions of the passenger list of the Chyebassa, we find that there were two AVON girls travelling:AVON, Emma (17) and AVON, Lydia (15). We can assume that Lydia is "Lilly".

From their ages, it is reasonable to assume that they can be found in the 1881 Census records. Sure enough, there they are:

Why a new Blog?

I had put these in my Drew of West Penwith and Beyond blog, but as the number of posts grew, it became obvious that the information they contained was really beyond the intent of that Blog. There are also enough clues around to make this a little study of what happened to at least some of the families that travelled out with Samuel and Jane Drew and the 5 children on the "Chyebassa".
